Sunday trains at Marple and Rose Hill - what is happening
Update June 2022. Marple currently has an hourly Sunday service. Post pandemic, service cuts mean that this service is far less usable than it was. The first service gets into Manchester at 10.32 which is too late for many people, although the Sunday service towards the Peak District leaves at 8.05 and gets into Sheffield at 9.05 which is better. However there are still few evening trains and no Sunday service at all at Rose Hill. This is disgraceful.
When Northern was run as a franchise there was a contract commitment to run two Sunday trains per hour at Marple. This is the minimum necessary before people see it as something they can use and trust. And it needs to run at times that are convenient to potential passengers, not times that are convenient for the operator.
At Rose Hill the situation is even worse with the prospect of lobbying just to keep what we have. And when Northern ran out of trained drivers, the Rose Hill line was the first to be cut. This is not the 1960s, but it feels like it.
Should we have to point out a modern society needs a proper service on Sundays and in the evenings? We will continue to campaign on behalf of users to put these problems right.
